High School American Lit (Mr. Krueger) Using the course written by Janice Campbell as a rough outline, this class will expose students to some of the key American writers. They will be exposed to several genres including the novel, the short story, poetry, and essay. They will also hone their skills in writing, criticism, analytical and synoptical reading, and discussion. The class will consist of reading assignments with a writing and reflection component which will be submitted online. We will meet twice a month to do Socratic discussion together as a group about the texts we're reading (times to be decided after we figure out who is all interested in the class). The students will also keep a commonplace journal throughout the year. These are the books proposed by Campbell for the course: Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and selected works by Longfellow The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne Moby Dick by Herman Melville The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald I may change up the reading list a bit throughout the year. We will start with Franklin's autobiography and Irving's short stories, so feel free to get those books in advance. There is no need to buy Campbell's curriculum book. I will post rubrics, resources, lectures, and assignments myself online throughout the year. Please contact Amanda Steele to register, feel free to email me with questions about the course at
