Families for Alternative Instruction Rights in SD (https://www.facebook.com/FAIRSD) is gearing up for another great year to homeschool in South Dakota! One of our top priorities right now is to build a website that will be a resource and connection point for all South Dakota homeschoolers. Homeschooling has not always been legal, and it definitely has not always been as free as it is currently in SD. In the 2021legislative session, we worked for 9 months to pass SB 177 to codify and secure more rights and freedoms for homeschoolers. We have to be vigilant in making sure those rights aren’t slowly eroded. Every year we hire a professional lobbyist who is in Pierre full time. This person monitors every bill that might effect our rights and is in constant contact with us. If something needs to be done that’s when we send out the alarm to all of you to get on the phone to your elected officials. Right now we are in the fundraising part of our year. We must raise the money to hire our lobbyist. It is an essential part of maintaining freedoms. Please become an active part of supporting homeschool freedoms by donating today. 100% of your donation goes directly to paying our lobbyist. Anything leftover goes to our events like Homeschool Day at the Capitol. All of our board members are volunteers and we donate our expertise and happily cover all of our own expenses. Thank you for your contributions! We can’t do this without you. http://donate.fairsd.org/

ACTION ALERT! Tuesday was the opening day of South Dakota's 97th Legislative Session. https://sdlegislature.gov After our tremendous victory last year for parental choice in education, FAIRSD will be taking a break from introducing any new legislation, but the SD homeschool community cannot rest! There are important actions to take now. One of the most important responsibilities of winning our new freedoms is defending them. FAIRSD has been hearing rumblings that there may be some attacks this session. We won't know until we see the bills. FAIRSD has contracted with Debbie Pease for the third consecutive year to be our lobbyist, our eyes and ears at the Capitol. We will be keeping you informed throughout session. Here are a few important actions everyone can do TODAY. 1. Be sure to stay informed. Action Alerts are time sensitive. Follow (not like) our public facebook page Families for Alternative Instruction Rights in South Dakota https://www.facebook.com/FAIRSD You can also sign up for emails at this link https://land.fairsd.org/subscribe 2. Know your legislators. Find them at this link. https://sdlegislature.gov/Legislators/Find 3. This one is key! This week, send a letter in the mail to your legislators to introduce and thank them for their service. Please DO NOT send it in email. Their inboxes get very full and we need to save this for fighting off bills. You can send your letter to the Capitol or their home address if it is listed in the directory (see the link above.) Be sure to tell them you are a constituent and that you homeschool. Tell them about your family. What have been the positive ways the passage of SB 177 has impacted your family? Make it personal. Your children might make a thank you note or draw them pictures, or you might send a photo. They also appreciate knowing that people are praying for them. 4. Please make a donation. Share the vision for protecting and defending our homeschool freedoms. There are costs associated with this important work. All the members of the FAIRSD committee are volunteers. We have no intention of being paid, but there are many expenses we encounter. Currently, we are raising funds to pay our lobbyist and for an inaugural Homeschool Day at the Capitol on March 2nd where we will host a lunch for all the legislators, and have tours and programs for homeschool families. More details about this will be coming soon. Your financial support makes this all possible. http://donate.fairsd.org/ Stay tuned. We are hoping for a quiet session, but we are alert and ready for any actions we need to take!
